After the Transmission EP, the long and eagerly awaited full length debut cd of the Australian Charles Fenech, aka Angel Theory is now released. A cd where people talked about with enthousiasm even before it was released. A remix by Covenant and Stark on the Transmission EP increased the curiosity even more. These expectations were triggered by the promise Charles Fenech would let us hear a different sound with this cd. Music strongly rooted in classic EBM, but very varied and with cinematographic qualities. This is something that has potential in times where the dark electro releases steem to stumble over eachother in the hurry to be released. Well, varied this music surely is. The cd is not fully dancefloor orientated, but offers experiments and ballads too. The first tracks ‘Resolutions’ and ‘Panic Attack’ are still dancefloor orientated tracks, of which especially ‘Resolutions’ appeals to me, but after this it already gets slower and introvert and there is space for emotions and observations, as the lyrics in ‘Ease the Pain’, supported with a heavy bass beat, show the listener. The very strong track ‘Saviour’ is drenched in emotions too. Starting with ‘Cold Fire’ there is more space for experiment. Further highlights are ‘Drifting Away’, the already familiair ‘Transmission’, the experimental, of Gridlock reminding, ‘Into Infinity’ and the intensely sung ‘Where Did i Go Wrong?’. One little negative aspect of this cd is that the mostly whispered vocals (except in ‘Gone’), although they do work at some moments, after listening to a whole cd tend to get a bit boring. This is a very nice EBM cd with soundtrack qualities, but the superlatives in enthousiastic reception are a bit exaggerated.
